Why did you want to write a children’s travel guide about Spain?

So many reasons! I love Spain and, as a parent, was able to share it with my daughter a number of times as she grew from a 5 year old to adulthood. As a professional writer, the opportunity to write about something I love and that reflects my heart and soul is pure joy. As a ‘closet artist’, the vibrancy and fun of the books was an instant attraction.

What did you like most in your writing process?

Being able to share the culture and country I love and helping kids to learn and love it also.

Because I normally write for adults, the team at FlyingKids Travel Guides taught me a great deal about writing for a younger audience – and, like your kids, I love to learn.

When I think about it, in all honesty, I was able to wear a cape and be Leonardo for a short time.

Which part of the book you like the most?

That’s an impossible question! Can I say from page 1 through the end?

If I have to come up with my favourite aspect, I think it was tying in the histories and cultures of very diverse groups in order to explain the Spanish and their country that your kids will learn about and experience.

Are there any concerns / conflict during the writing process?

I’m sure the editor was pulling her hair out at times. Making up and telling stories to a child is far different from writing a book for them. I had to master the latter.

Are there any special recommendation while using Spain’s book?

The FlyingKids Travel Guides are a wonderful introduction not only to the country you might be visiting but to the concepts of history, culture, societal influences, language, economics, foods, and various forms of government.

I have friends who are educators, others who are homeschooling parents, and there is unanimous agreement that the series format is an unparalleled educational tool for sharing convoluted concepts in an easy to understand and fun way. Fun being the operable word from a youngster’s perspective.

When learning is an adventure, interactive and FUN – the combination is conducive to a lifelong pattern.

Here is how Wendy describes herself:

I’m Wendy Crawford, a writer and marketing person in the eyes of clients and acquaintances. The real person, the ones friends know as Wendy, was born with an insatiable wanderlust and a talent for the written word that allowed me to live in many countries over the years. I became enamored with Spain as a teenager – long enough ago to have been one of the back-packing, thumb-out for a ride generation; and after the first two dozen transatlantic flights back I quit counting.

There is something about Spain that touches and pulls at my heart and soul. Considering I’ve called Honolulu, Sydney and Boston home that’s indicative of just how deep my love affair with Spain is. I hope your children fall as deeply in love with the country on your visit as I did and do with each visit!
