There are so many things to do and see with kids all around France that it can be tough deciding where to begin! Whilst many people automatically head to the vibrant capital of Paris or the glorious beaches of the south, the northern part of the country also has many fine gems just waiting to be discovered!
Here are our pick of some top things to do in northern France on a fabulous family vacation:
Brest, Brittany
Brest is a delightful city close to the coast. As well as nice beaches within easy reach the city also offers plenty to do and see away from the sands. A boat trip around the bay is a nice way to get a different feel for the area and afterwards you can take a nice stroll around the harbour and see the hundreds of boats that bob about on the water. Climb the lighthouse for great views and take trips to the nearby quaint villages. Oceanopolis is often a firm favourite with families, where everyone can enjoy learning more about creatures that live in the deep blue sea as well as being able to observe a wide array of aquatic life. Try and get to the feeding sessions and the touch pool times. The botanical gardens are another popular choice with its pretty lake, pleasant trails, wildlife, picnicking spots, and abundance of plants and flowers.
Lille, Nord-Pas de Calais
The pretty city centre of Lille is just begging to be explored, and there are lots of architectural delights for you and the kids to feast your eyes upon. The Grand Place with its interesting buildings and fountains is a favourite spot. Take a peek at the enormous murals in the train station, wander around the markets, and stop for a pastry in a charming little bakery. There is a zoo and amusement park within the citadel complex and the nearby puppet theatre in Vauban Garden often goes down a treat with kids in the summer months. There are several museums and art galleries that may be appealing to kids depending on what they enjoy.

Mont Saint-Michel, Normandy
A city bursting with history and culture (not to mention the fact that it was here that Joan of Arc was burned at the stake!), Rouen makes for a great day trip with the kids. The old cathedral is sure to inspire imagination and you can climb to the top of the city’s Big Clock for great views. The pretty botanic gardens are a great place for kids to run and play and the nearby forests have lots of nature, hiking trails, and biking routes. There is a terrific play area at the heart of the city.
