Thailand is famous for its stunning islands and beaches, with many families heading to the dazzling shores each year for a fabulous, fun-filled, and memorable family vacation.
Most of the country’s finest islands can be found in the south, although there are also some nice islands in the central part of the country, within just a few hours from Bangkok – perfect for if you want to inject a little bit of beach time into your trip but also want to fit in so much more to your holiday.
Some great islands in Thailand to visit with the kids include:
Phuket
Thailand’s biggest island, there are many attractions and activities for the whole family to enjoy. It is particularly good for families because the sheer numbers of tourists that visit Phuket mean that you will have no problems finding English-speaking people to assist you, familiar food in case your kids are wary of trying new things, and modern facilities and amenities that are similar to what you would find back at home. Transportation around the island is easy.
There are several different beaches to choose between, each offering a different vibe. Whether you are looking for somewhere lively with lots going on, or somewhere that is a bit quieter and ideal for relaxation, you’ll find a beach in Phuket to suit your mood.
The lively and colourful FantaSea Show is usually popular with the whole family, and you can all learn a little more about Thai culture whilst being entertained and kept spell-bound. The Trickeye Museum will challenge all of you, making you question your own eyes! And the Upside Down House is incredibly novel! There are water parks, temples, and cool activities such as go-karting and zorbing too.
Koh Samui
Another popular island, visitors will find it easy to find transportation, familiar cuisine, and English-speaking people. Many hotels have kids’ clubs and special children’s pools.
As well as the gorgeous island, Koh Samui is known for being one of the top places in Thailand for spas and massages. Whilst this may appeal more to the adults of the family, kids can also enjoy experiencing a traditional Thai massage whilst the parents relax close by.
Explore traditional temples with the kids and let them take a peek into more of the local culture. Discover delights of the deep blue sea with a spot of snorkelling. Help the local animal life and have fun at the animal rescue centre. Be in awe of the famous Big Buddha. Take a boat trip around the island. And more!
Koh Chang
If time is limited and you are looking for a beautiful island within reasonable close proximity of the capital of Bangkok, pretty Koh Chang may be an excellent choice. Combining white sandy beaches with inner jungle areas, families can mix days by the seaside with days exploring the jungle and spotting wildlife. There are several gorgeous waterfalls to visit – perfect for a picnic!
Visit charming fishing villages, take a boat trip through the mangroves, see fireflies flashing in the night sky, visit temples, take boat trips, go snorkelling … there are so many things to do on Koh Chang!
Krabi’s Koh Lanta is a chilled out island off the coast of Krabi. Nice beaches and a handful of attractions will keep you busy. Koh Phi Phi is often said to be the prettiest island in the whole country. It can get very packed though, so may not be ideal for families that are used to a quieter atmosphere. And, if you want to head off the beaten path a little bit the Trang Islands are simply stunning!
